Mpho Sefali to be a guest poet at the Afro Poetry launch

POETRY group, Afro Poetry, will perform in a Valentine’s Day eve show at Victory Restaurant in Moshoeshoe II.
Dubbed “Pre-Valentine’s Day Launch”, the show is also meant to revive the poetry scene which has been on the decline due to limited platforms. Afro Poetry was formed in 2014 and consists of Thapelo “Polly” Makotoko, Mahlomola Thulo, Nkululeko Tahlei, Mpho Leteka, Napo Balima, Tsepang Masenkane and Tlhohonolofatso Lepheane.
Makotoko told the Weekender this week that the event would be the “first step” towards reviving the poetry scene.
“We are an association of writers and performers, and our goal is to publish as many books as possible and hold events that will increase the platforms for poetry to the youth around the country,” he said.
“Our goal is to make Lesotho’s poetry sphere bigger and for the country to become the epicentre of poetry in Africa. We want to bring back the lost poetry vibe we used to have.”
He said the limited performing platforms had demoralised poets.
“Truly speaking, platforms for poetry have become scarce in the country, and it has destroyed the morale of speakers and writers. However, poetry is the spoken word that passes different messages and therefore cannot die,” said Makotoko.
“This event is only an introduction to four epic events that we are planning to have during Easter, winter, Independence celebrations and the last show in December.
“While our focus this year will be on performing in Maseru, we intend to foray into all the districts of the country next year.
“We are also planning to have high school poetry events which will help us nurture raw talent which would otherwise not get the platform.”
The show will also feature performances from Mpho Sefali, Accapella Moment, Kot Inferno, Mhujestik Thamae and MC Kesh among others.
